Winter 2025 Workshops
TAs and AI: A Workshop on Navigating the Process of Writing Assessment
As a teaching assistant, have you struggled to answer questions about generative AI and how such tools may or may not comply with course policies? When marking written assignments, have you wondered if AI tools have been used and if so, what should you do?
In this two-hour workshop hosted by Dr. Marvin Lam and the Health Sciences Writing Centre, we will explore how to address these concerns and build a community of practice. This targeted workshop is designed to equip TAs with practical strategies for addressing AI-related challenges. Participants will collaborate to critically analyze sample texts (both AI-generated and student-written) to think more clearly about both the product and the process of writing. Participants will develop concrete strategies for how to navigate course policy discussions with students and how to leverage opportunities AI may offer for effective TA practice.
Registration is open to all graduate students in the health sciences, and can be completed using this form.
Getting Started With Publishing in the Health Sciences: A Workshop Series
Are you a graduate student in the health sciences aspiring to publish your research? Join us for a three-session workshop series on how to begin your publishing journey. The series will help you lay the foundations for establishing yourself as an author in the health sciences and guide you in creating a structured outline for a health sciences publication.
The workshops will be led by Dr. Danielle Martak, Writing Instructor, Health Sciences Writing Centre. Refreshments will be served. Please direct any questions to Dr. Danielle Martak at danielle.martak@utoronto.ca.
Session One: Foundations
The first session will introduce students to the foundations of becoming an author and the key elements of the health sciences publishing landscape. This session will look at topics such as author identifiers, writing tools, impact, finding target journals, and avoiding deceptive publishers. This session will take the format of a lecture broken up with short activities to help students start establishing themselves as health sciences authors. Please register by January 24, 2025.
Session Two: Development
The second session will explore how to develop a health sciences publication. This session will address concerns such as organizing authorship, determining your publication’s scope and structure, and finding and applying reporting guidelines. This session will take the format of a lecture broken up with short activities to ensure students have everything they need to start drafting a structured outline for a health sciences publication. Please register by February 21, 2025.
Session Three: Outlining
This session will take the format of a structured outlining workshop. Unlike the first two sessions, this session will not include direct instruction. Instead, students will work on completing structured outlines for their planned publications based on the information provided in Session Two. Writing Instructors from the Health Sciences Writing Centre will be present to help students with their outlining processes. Please register by March 14, 2025.
